Before your first tanning session

Who should not use a sunbed, and what should you do before and after a session? A short checklist to read before your first visit.

Every effect you see in a sunbed you would also see in the sun: colour, and with too much of it, sunburn. This list gathers the questions to ask yourself before your first session. If you have any health concerns, talk to your doctor first.

Do not use a sunbed if

  • You are under 18. The World Health Organization recommends that people under 18 do not use sunbeds.
  • You are pregnant.
  • Your skin burns in the sun without ever tanning (skin type 1).
  • You have recently had sunburn. Wait until your skin has fully healed.
  • You have had an organ transplant.
  • You have a skin condition that flares up in the sun or in a sunbed.
  • You have been drinking alcohol.

Ask your doctor first

  • If you take medication. Some antibiotics, acne medicines (such as isotretinoin) and some blood pressure medicines make the skin sensitive to light. Your doctor or pharmacist can tell you which ones are a problem.
  • If you have a heart condition, epilepsy, diabetes, claustrophobia or panic attacks.
  • If you notice changes in your moles or have a family history of skin cancer.

Before the session

  • Remove make-up, perfume and deodorant. Some perfume ingredients can cause skin staining under UV light.
  • Take out contact lenses and remove jewellery.
  • Do not use creams or oils that are not made for sunbeds.
  • Do not tan straight after laser hair removal, waxing, peels or permanent make-up.
  • Do not sunbathe and use a sunbed on the same day.
  • If you weigh 110 kg or more, use a stand-up booth instead of a lie-down bed.

During the session

  • Wear UV goggles or keep your eyes closed. Eyelids alone do not give enough protection, so we recommend goggles.
  • Cover tattoos to protect them from fading.
  • If your skin feels hot or uncomfortable, end the session early.
  • If the suggested time feels too long, shorten it. You know your skin best.

After the session

  • Moisturise. Hydrated skin holds colour longer.
  • Wait at least 48 hours between sessions. The pigment that gives your tan its colour needs that time to form.
  • If you notice redness or itching, postpone your next session.

If you are unsure about your skin type or which device suits you, call or visit one of our branches. We set the time for your first session together with you.
