Are you 18 or older?

Sunbeds are not recommended under 18.

How the test decides

The rules behind the test and their sources. Open any topic to read more.

Skin type

We ask about your skin type with a simple version of the Fitzpatrick scale, which dermatologists use: how easily your skin burns and how well it tans. This is a first assessment; our team analyses your skin when you visit.

The World Health Organization's 2003 guidance and Germany's Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) advise against sunbed use for skin types I and II. The test does not recommend a sunbed for these two types.

Who should not use a sunbed?

The list in the health question is based on the European sunbed standard EN 60335-2-27:2013 (based on IEC 60335-2-27:2009, clause 7.12) and our salon's advice. The standard says sunbeds should not be used by people:

  • under 18
  • whose skin cannot tan or burns easily
  • with more than 16 moles of 2 mm or more; a mole over 5 mm across that is asymmetrical, has several colours and an irregular border; or abnormally coloured patches of skin
  • who freckle easily or have naturally red hair
  • who have had skin cancer or are predisposed to it, or whose mother, father, sibling or child has had melanoma
  • who often had severe sunburn as a child
  • with sunburn
  • taking a medicine or with a condition that causes light sensitivity

Our salon's advice

We advise against sunbeds during pregnancy, after an organ transplant and while taking medicine that suppresses the immune system. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) also advises transplant patients to avoid sunbeds.

If you are not sure how a medicine affects your skin in light, your moles have changed, or you have a condition such as heart disease, epilepsy or diabetes, the test sends you to your doctor first.

We do not ask about temporary things such as sunburn, sun exposure in the last 48 hours, alcohol, laser hair removal, waxing or a peel. They are on the "Before your session" list on the result screen.

Lie-down bed or stand-up booth?

At 110 kg or more we recommend a stand-up booth. The manufacturer's load limit is 150 kg for our KBL devices and 135 kg for the Sunangel. The Luxura V8's load limit has not been published, so the test only recommends it below 110 kg. Above 150 kg we do not recommend a device; fill in the form and the branch will call you.

Otherwise the choice is yours: on a lie-down bed you lie down, in a stand-up booth you stand.

What the test does not do

The test is not a medical assessment and does not give a session length. UV light contributes to skin ageing and can cause skin cancer. Our team sets your session length at the branch, based on a skin analysis and the device.

Your answers stay private

The test runs entirely in your browser and does not store your answers. If you send a booking request from the results screen, your estimated skin type, weight, preference and the recommended or chosen device are added as a note. You see this note before sending and can remove it. Your answer to the health question is not sent.

Questions about the test

Is the result definitive?

No, it is a first assessment. When you visit, our team analyses your skin and sets the session length accordingly. Decisions about your health are for your doctor.

My skin burns easily. Can I use a sunbed?

We advise against it. The World Health Organization advises against sunbed use for skin that burns without tanning (type I) and skin that burns easily and tans little (type II).

Why do you ask about my weight?

To choose the right device. At 110 kg or more we recommend a stand-up booth. The manufacturer's load limit for our KBL devices is 150 kg. Above that, fill in the form and the branch will call you.

Which branch has the recommended device?

Choose the device on the booking form or call a branch. Our team will tell you which branch has it.

Why doesn't the test give a session length?

The time depends on the device, its lamps and your skin type. Our team analyses your skin at the branch and starts your first session with a short time.
